Months after landfall, the aftereffects of Hurricane Harvey are still present for much of the Gulf Coast; which makes the need for relief as important now as it was on Day 1. Committed to helping those in need, our team was happy to help Port Arthur families affected by Hurricane Harvey receive free furniture at the BCL of Texas Port Arthur Families Matter event.
The furniture items available include dressers, dining room tables, couches, lamps, mirrors, desks, armoires, living room chairs, and more, generously donated by Las Vegas hotels that no longer need the items. In total, 7 truckloads were donated to help over 100 families.
The relief carries increased importance when analytics are considered in tandem: A recent survey shows that the Golden Triangle area, including Port Arthur and Beaumont, was disproportionately affected by Hurricane Harvey, with significantly more major home damage than that of the Houston area. This December study indicated that one-third of those who lived in the Golden Triangle say their lives are “still very disrupted” because of the storm.
We supported the event by providing hearty, healthy meals to the over 100+ volunteers and provided helpers that unloaded the over 900 pieces of furniture over 2 days in 30+ degree weather.
It wasn’t just the Corporate Office that lent a helping hand; Executive Director Andrea Allen and Managing Director Billy Filer were the event coordinators and kept everyone energized and motivated.
Other partners for the event included: The City of Port Arthur, Operation Blessings, Port Arthur Independent Schools, St Joseph Catholic Church, IF Staffing and Construction, NeighborWorks America and Nechama Jewish Response to Disaster. We’re proud to have partnered with these wonderful associations to help make a difference for those in need.
